Oral History Projects/Courses Looking for an Alliance Partner for 2019-20

Type: Research project with an undergraduate

This research project involves collecting oral histories of a representative group of home gardeners in Albion, Michigan. Over the nineteenth and through the middle of the twentieth century, the city of Albion diversified to include a broad range of ethnic and racial populations. While other scholars have recorded much of Albion's ethnic history, none has focused on garden agrodiversity and cultural identity. We are especially interested in how gardeners influenced each other as they adapted to their new locations and how their gardening practices changed over generations.

This will be a two to three-year project beginning Spring 2019.
